For fun

Pat the Fly

Run. Fly. Be better than who you are.

The whitepaper promised a game. Here it is. Official $RUNFLY. Stomp squatters, bounce off Dave, don’t get cleavered by the Kebab King. Cyan portals go up. Pink portals go down. Play while Studio renders — it doesn’t spend tokens.

PatWanna play a game whilst you’re rendering? Thought so.

Click the game, then arrows / A D to move, Space to jump, hold X or Shift to fly. How to play is below.

On a phone, rotate if you need the buttons. Fullscreen-ish: open just the climb.

How to play

Get Pat to the top. That’s basically it.

There isn’t a party at the top. Beat Sausage King, survive the last roof run, take the cyan portal. The screen says RUN FLY, Pat looks briefly pleased, and that is the celebration. No fireworks. No credits. A quip, a share button, and permission to close the tab.

The city runs vertically through alleys, fire escapes, rooftops, clouds and eventually parts of the atmosphere where a pub fly has no legitimate reason to be.

Every 800 height, the number in the corner ticks up and the HUD calls it a level. As in a storey. As in a round. As in the HUD would. It isn’t a level. It’s just how far you’ve flown. There is no ultimate level. There is an ultimate geezer, eight bosses, and a door.

You need to get past all of them.

Jump between pads, use your wings when the gaps get too wide, and stomp enemies from above. Hitting them from the side hurts Pat instead, so try not to fly face-first into people.

Gold pads mean trouble. Beat the boss, survive the roof section afterwards and find the next portal.

Cyan portals take you up. Pink portals take you back down. Pink can be useful if you missed something. It can also undo ten minutes of competent climbing remarkably quickly.

They’re a bit of a black hole. You don’t know how far you’re going. Pot luck.

Collect what you find on the way. 10 beer crates gives you an extra life. 100 coins gets you another pint. Pints can be drunk on a pad or thrown at bosses, which is probably the closest this game gets to resource management.

Food usually helps.

Usually.

Then there’s Dave.

Dave isn’t an enemy. He’s just Dave. You’ll find him sitting, fishing, drinking, sleeping and generally occupying places that would be more useful without him. Bounce off him rather than killing him. The first Dave you find on a run may give you an extra life.

Nobody knows why.

Dave has a very good union.

Choose Easy, Mid or Hard at the start and play as Pat or Patricia. If you’re playing Pat, Patricia appears at rest stops along the climb. Find her and Pat gets a kiss and his lives refilled.

That is the entire romantic subplot.

Pat the Fly

The ultimate beer-drinking geezer

Pat the Fly, pint in hand
Pat the Fly, pint in hand

Pat is a fly with a pint, a gold medal and far too much responsibility.

He originally crawled out of rly.fun, somehow acquired his own token, then a Video Engine, and eventually a platform game because apparently nobody was supervising the roadmap.

The game is essentially one very long night out played vertically.

Most of the people trying to kill Pat are people he knows. Some want money. Some want revenge. One works in pest control. Several appear to have legitimate grievances.

Pat’s solution to all of them is roughly the same: get above them, land on their head and continue towards the stratosphere.

The motto is BE BETTER THAN WHO YOU ARE.

Pat is making slow progress.

$RUNFLY has nothing to do with your score. The game doesn’t pay tokens, stake anything or affect Video Engine renders. It’s just something stupid to play while the useful bit is processing.

PatDon’t be a sausage. Be a Pat.

The climb

The scenery changes as you get higher:

  1. 0–499

    Back Alley

Bins, brickwork and the beginning of several poor decisions.

  2. 500–1,199

    Fire Escapes

    The city starts going vertical.

  3. 1,200–2,099

    Roof Storm

Wet roofs, bad visibility and considerably less pavement.

  4. 2,100–3,199

    Cloud Deck

At this point Pat should probably turn around.

  5. 3,200–4,499

    Night Thermals

    He doesn’t.

  6. 4,500+

    Stratosphere of Poor Choices

There is now genuinely no excuse for any of this.

The bosses don’t line up neatly with those sections. That’s deliberate. The city isn’t a spreadsheet.

The regulars

  1. Height 800

    Kebab King

    Cleaver. Spatula. Rotating meat.

Pat allegedly stole a doner from him years ago and then complained it was chewy.

    Kebab King remembers.

He throws chunks of rotating meat across the screen while guarding the pad. Get over him, stomp the crown and move on before he starts explaining the chilli sauce.

  2. Height 1,600

    Big Terry

    Tracksuit. Pint. Temper.

An old drinking mate of Pat’s.

Terry bought a round. Pat left.

There isn’t much more backstory required.

Unlike most bosses, Terry doesn’t stand around throwing things. He comes after you. Give him room when he charges, get behind or above him and don’t expect the tracksuit to contain mercy.

  3. Height 2,000

    Giant Skel

    Large skeleton. Unresolved tab.

Nobody is entirely sure what Giant Skel was before becoming Giant Skel.

Pat claims he remembers him from a lock-in.

    This explains nothing.

Stomp the skull and don’t ask questions.

  4. Height 2,400

    The Landlord

    Glassware first. Barrel afterwards.

Pat once told him he’d sort the rent on Friday.

    We haven’t established which Friday.

The Landlord starts by throwing pints and eventually moves on to barrels, suggesting negotiations have broken down completely.

  5. Height 2,800

    Squash Squad

Fly swatter. Chemical tank. Actual employment.

Finally, somebody with a defensible reason for wanting Pat dead.

Get too close and he uses the swatter. Keep your distance and he sprays the place with green gas.

For once, Pat may actually be the villain.

  6. Height 3,200

    Bin Lord

    Rubbish armour. Plunger.

    Nobody crowned him.

    Nobody intends to.

Bin Lord appears to have constructed armour from whatever the council refused to collect and now controls the upper rubbish district with a plunger.

    Don’t negotiate. Stomp.

  7. Height 4,000

    The Bouncer

Three times Pat’s size. Approximately 70% neck.

    Pat isn’t on the list.

Pat has never been on the list.

The Bouncer intends to preserve this proud tradition by repeatedly throwing him off the platform.

No clever projectiles here. Just stay away from the shove and attack from above.

  8. Height 4,800

    Sausage King

A giant sausage that fires smaller sausages.

    We had a meeting.

    Everybody agreed.

    This is the final boss.

Beat Sausage King, survive the last roof run and take the cyan portal. That’s the way out.

Take the pink one and you’ll eventually meet him again.

At that point, that’s on you.

PatEight bosses? I’ve been barred from more pubs than that.

Why this exists

Video renders take a minute.

You could stare at the progress bar.

Or you could send a beer-drinking fly through several thousand metres of urban infrastructure while being pursued by a kebab merchant, a pest-control operative and an enormous sausage.

The game is free. It doesn’t earn anything, stake anything or interfere with your render. When your video is ready, close it and get back to whatever supposedly sensible thing you were doing.

Pat will still be here.

Probably in a bin.

For information about the part of RUNFLY that actually does something useful, the FAQ remains regrettably available.

GPU still cooking?

Back to Studio when the clips land. Pat will wait. Probably in a bin.
